Many Americans won't support the policies we need to address climate change until they're sure it won't spoil their happiness. So learning how to be happy with fewer material possessions may ease the way to getting these policies adopted.
We also need "green" technology, but changing the energy infrastructure of the United States is going to be expensive. Changing people's minds is relatively cheap, and trends easily percolate across the Internet, especially among young people. The technology we need may therefore come from discoveries in brain science that make sustainable living more satisfying as well as from innovations in clean energy.
